Skype Exchange - Baltimore

On Friday 30th September the beavers and swans gathered together we made our first contact with another school
using the internet communication technology Skype.
The grade 2 students prepared questions that could be asked to an "alien". The children didn't know who they were contacting or where they came from.
This made them really think carefully about what they were asking, and
not just to ask (closed) Yes/No questions!

The kindergarten students at the Calvert school in Baltimore, Maryland, USA prepared questions of their own. Despite being younger than our class, the Calvert students had more experience with Skype exchanges than us.

We even managed to sing our "Flat Stanley" song and send it 6614km away!

As Baltimore is 6 hours behind we needed to make the call at the end of the day.
The children at both ends of the Skype line found it funny that at SIS we were finishing the school day and the American students were just arriving at school.

September Exercise

All students from Kindergarten to Grade 4 went out on our yearly "September Bummel"! This year we visited the beautiful countryside around Muri and visited the playground and farm animals at Muri-Moos.

Waiting in line for the descent!
The huge pirate ship was a hit as was the "zipwire"!
Our last chance to see the animals. These cattle must have been even hotter than we were!

"SPORT"
Over the past few weeks grade 2 have been busy learning about balance
and tension during our PE lessons. Here are a few of the balances they created.

Bravo Anastasia!

Und hier das Titelblatt:

Rocket Science

The students had lots of fun seeing how far air propelled rockets can fly.

If you look really, really carefully you might just see the bubbles.
Unfortunately these didn't give this rocket any extra power that the foot pump didn't already have.

This rocket involves a bicycle pump, a cork, some water, a bottle and a lot of muscle power, phew!
Have a go at this at home (but with adult supervision and a lot of space)!

Luckily "launch control" kept an eye on the rockets so that they didn't shoot straight
at the passing SBB trains!
We looked at a variety of ways to create our own air rockets.

Students used large and small PET bottles to pump air into a home-made rocket. We discovered from our high-tech experiments that rockets needed to be light and well made in order to make the most of the air pushing them off the tops of the bottle. The best materials were paper and drinking straws.

Here are some of the finished products. NASA here we come!
